The security staff at Kayerekera uranium mine in Karonga the northern part of Malawi on Thursday started boycotting their work due to poor working condition.
The security staff also want their General Manager Alex Shelland to deal with Doug McGibbon who is the top boss accusing him of mistreating them.
“What is happening here is that our boss in the department McGibbon tends to fire workers without necessary reasons,” said one of the guards who spoke to Nyasa Times.
They disclosed that “McGibbon is doing that because he wants to recruit new employees as he is getting huge allowances after training them.”
Nyasa Times understands that for a training of one security guard in five days the trainer receives K500, 000.
However, the officials at Kayerekera have not commented on the matter.
Since the uranium mine was put under care and maintenance in 2014, the security department has been continuing with their work.
Despite government claims that the China National Nuclear Corporation only owns 25 percent to Kayerekera Uranium Mine, rumours have emerged that Paladin sold its 51 percent shares of the company to the Chinese firm.
