It’s KB against Wanderers: FISD Challenge Cup final preview

The long awaited cup final for the inaugural Foundation for Irrigation and Sustainable Development (FISD) Challenge Cup Final is finally here and will be played this coming Saturday 10th December 2016 at the Civo Stadium in the Capital City  Lilongwe as two footballing giants Kamuzu Barracks and Mighty Be Forward Wanderers face off.

It promises to be a cracker as the Nomads seek their second trophy of the season with their new mentor Yasin ‘Titch’ Osman whilst the Soldiers will be looking for their first trophy since they last won the Carlsberg Cup in 2013 after defeating fellow soldiers Moyale Barracks in the final courtesy of a Harvey Nkacha loan goal.

The Saturday’s encounter will be the side’s fourth meeting this season in both league and cup.assignments.

Out of the three games already played, Wanderers won twice while Kamuzu Barracks won once.

Kamuzu Barracks who beat Silver Strikers 1-0 to reach the final will be looking to transform their excellent league form into the cup final while the nomads would also  like to maintain their history of being the only team that win any newly established domestic cup.

Both sides have kept a clean sheet and never conceded even a single goal in their respective journey’s to the prestigious K45 Million worth Cup final.

According to Kamuzu Barracks Team Manager Francis Nthukwa Shaba, the preparations for the cup final started on Tuesday and being soldiers they are always ready for battles.

His counterpart Steven Madeira also said they are ready and come Saturday, something big will happen at the Civo Stadium.

Kamuzu Barracks has no any injury or even a single yellow or red card suspension while Wanderers only have Boston Kabango and Jafale Chande on the injury list but they have received a boost as they welcome back Isaac ‘Atcheya’ Kaliati, experienced defender Harry Nyirenda among others and there are no suspensions.

Both Shaba and Madeira have predicted a tough and competative cup final.

“Cup finalss are always different from other games but we are ready and we expect something big to happen at Civo Stadium this Saturday” said Madeira.

On the other hand, Shaba said: “We are starting our preparations with no injuries and suspensions and we hope to do better. We have had a rough road to the final unlike our colleagues but we have made it”.

Shaba added his team is having an advantage because supporters from other teams also rallying behind them.

KB coach Billy Phambala has always expressed his wish and maintained from the word go that his ambition this season is to win the league title and a trophy.

Phambala was again the man in-charge who guided the military side to 2013 Carlsberg Cup triumph.

Pre-final activities.
Meanwhile, the organizers of the competition have lined up several activities prior to the final match day.

The party starts Friday night with a gig in the Capital City before a Trophy Street Parade the following morning and other display’s at the stadium.

Gate Charges
Main organizers of the Competition-Football Association of Malawi (FAM) have released gate charges for the grand finale.

A statement released on Tuesday reveals that tickets will be sold right on the match day.

Open stand tickets will be sold at K1,500, Covered Stands tickets will be at K5,000 while VIP tickets will be sold at K7,000.

Security
The Malawi FA new General Secretary Alfred Gunda have promised all the fans that preparations are going on smoothly and urged them to come in large numbers as they have put in place strict measures to ensure that there will be tight security.

The fans have also been advised to maintain their sportsmanship.

Background
Malawi FA and FISD Company Limited signed a five year lucrative sponsorship deal on 9th June 2016.

The competition started in September from the district level then regional level before reaching the national level.

The 16 TNM Super League teams were later drawn against each other with the last season’s top eight teams seeded to produce eight teams that were combined with eight teams from the three regions in the round of 16.

The national draw was conducted on 6th September before the competition reached its quarterfinal and semifinal stages all the way to the finals.

Prizes
Champions at regional level received K1 Million each while runners up at regional level received K500,000.

Third place teams pocketed K250,000 each.

On individual prizes, the sponsors announced a surprising late package of K50,000 to each of the top goal scorer from each region.

National Champions will walk away with K10 Million while runners up will pocket K4,000,000.

All the semifinalists at national level were splashe K1 Million.

Top goal scorer will get K200,000 while all man of the matches from quarterfinals at national level received K50, 000.
