Kunkuyu challenges constituents: ‘I am entitled to contest anywhere in Malawi’

Minister of Tourism and Culture Moses Kunkuyu has challenged his constituents in Blantyre City South that he is entitled to contest anywhere in the country and that people should not panic.

The constituents through Young Achievers for Development (YAD) summoned Kunkuyu and 11 other aspiring MPs to roundtable discussions at Zingwangwa Secondary school on Saturday.

The aim of the meeting, according to YAD President, Jefferson Milanzie, was to interact and scrutinize the aspiring MPs and ward councilors whether the constituents can trust them with “this torrid responsibility to represent us.”

Most people wanted to know if what they hear that he is contesting in Dedza was true. Kunkuyu instead of being candid said he is entitled to contest anywhere in the country.

Kunkuyu : Jeered

“As a Malawian I am entitled to contest anywhere because I am a bonefide citizen of this country,” said Kunkuyu, attracting jeering from the audience.

All aspiring MPs were given time to explain why they want to contest for the area not elsewhere.

One of them, Wilfled Dambuleni said he was concerned that the area has been left out in terms of development, therefore “I wish to transform it, although I know most MPs in this area have let the constituents down.”

On his party, Milinzie observed that it is easy to promise the people several development activities, but when voted into power, very few deliver or fulfill the promises.

“Our intention here is for you to give the audience a brief account of what you will do, but when the people see nothing in you, and then I will contest.

“We, being electorates, invited all aspirants in order to interact with you and scrutinize whether you can be trusted with this torrid responsibility to represent us.

“I did highlight that should we as young people and every development conscience electorate not find one competent candidate among these 14 aspirants, then obviously I will volunteer to stand and continue with my community development work on a larger scale now,” said Milanzie to the delight of the audience.
