Lawi, Maskal to headline Malawi @50 party in US

Malawi’s Afro-Soul Gospel musician, Lawi and Afro-R&B singer Maskal will headline a big party organised by Malawian community in Washing DC in commemorating Malawi’s 50th independence.

One of the organisers Eddie Naming’ona told Nyasa Times that the celebrations will run from July 4 to the actual Independence Day July 6.

The event will be held at the prestigious Fillmore Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Naming’ona said Malawi organisations in US have teamed up under an umbrella of Malawi Community USA and the organising committee of the Golden Jubilee party is known as Malawi@50.

He disclosed the musician of the moment, Lawi of ‘amaona kuchedwa’ fame will headline the party and also ‘Zili ndi iwe’ star Maskal.

There will also be performance of Indika Band, Luis Chikuni, Ntambosi Chiwambo, and Tiwonge Mhango.

Naming’ona said other performance will be by Lundu VYBZ, a reggae band composed of kids of Khondo Lungu.

Malawian DJs such as DJ Chazz, Ken Malomboza and Bright Nkhata’s daughter Agnes will also take part throughout the weekend, according to Naming’ona.

He explained that Golden Jubilee celebration will have events such as, a discussion forum, dinner and dance party and a family picnic.

“Discussion Forum will kick off with the movie, The Last Fishing Boat by Shemu Joyah and cover topics such as dual citizenship, immigration and insurance,” said Naming’omba.

The fashion show will feature Malawi’s top fashion designers Lilly Alfonso and Mwai Namaona of Nzika Wear. Others will be Cellina Mlusu-Torimiro and Derovee Designs.
