Lawyer Chancy Gondwe attacked, hospitalised

One of the country’s rising law practitioners, Chancy Gondwe was on Friday night attacked and injured by unknown thugs three days after winning a case against President Joyce Banda and her family.

Gondwe met his fate at his home in BCA in Limbe when 20 thugs armed with clubs and panga knives broke into his compound at around 10pm.

According to his wife, the assailants only attacked Gondwe out of four people who were in the house before stealing some household items and official vehicle Toyota Hilux SA 722.

“They broke through the main gate and forced their way into the house baying for his life. But he managed to escape through the back door before they caught him at the boys-quarters,” narrated his wife.

She added: “They pounced on him with panga knives and clubs, leaving him almost dead. They never hurt anybody else but made away with plasma television, a home theatre, his cell-phones as well as the company car”.

Limbe police Public Relations Officer, Chifundo Chibwezo said were still hunting for the assailants but they have managed to recover the vehicle which was dumped in Mawoni in Mpingwe.

Gondwe who is senior lawyer at Chagwamjira Law Firm sustained serious injuries on the head and both legs and is currently admitted to Blantyre Adventist Hospital.

Gondwe’s attack came just three days after winning a case in which he represented online Malawi Voice editor, Justice Mponda accused of extortion by President Joyce Banda’s family.

Mponda was acquitted by Blantyre Magistrates Court on Tuesday and was immediately rewarded K500,000, which was the centre of attention in the case.

The lawyer also managed to get Mponda off the hook in another case in 2012 in which the journalist was accused of insulting President Joyce Banda.

Among other notable and prominent cases Gondwe has managed to win include the one in which Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) wanted to confiscate late President Bingu wa Mutharika’s vehicles over duty.

He recently managed to have the former Malawian ambassador to Japan Dr. John Chikago, who is considered as accomplice of former President, Bakili Muluzi in the high-profile corruption case, unconditionally discharged by the High Court.
