Likoma Jetty might see light of day

The construction of Likoma Jetty, which has been a song since time immemorial, might soon be under construction after Likoma District Council and stakeholders recently agreed unanimously to construct a permanent jetty.

General Manager of Malawi Shipping Company and Malawi Ports Alcides Pessoa and his technical advisor Austin Msowoya has since commended the council for the decision.

The two spoke after meeting the district’s Area Development Committee and officials from the council last week.

Pessoa said it is pathetic to see how people, especially women and children, struggle to get into the boats and the ship.

He said Mota-Engil, the concessionaire running the country’s ports, had the same plan of constructing a permanent jetty at Likoma, but were waiting for either the district council or the Ministry of Transport and Public Works to initiate the idea and start the project.
