Lilongwe ‘block leaders’ march to demand council directors removed

Block leaders, self imposed traditional leaders in the City of Lilongwe Wednesday petitioned the government to remove all directors claiming they have failed residents.

The block leaders marched to Lilongwe Civic offices to present the petition on Wednesday morning in defiant of a call by the council for them to resign.

Mayor of Lilongwe Willie Chapondera and council chief executive officer Moza Zeleza received the petition.

“All directors should be removed, they have completely failed. There have been removals of chief executive officers but nothing is changing. All of them must go,” said one block leader as he presented the petition.

Zeleza said the council would hand over the petition to relevant authorities but was quick to say the block leaders have no powers whatsoever to remove or fire any council staff willy-nilly, saying there are laid down procedures on how council staff can be removed.

The council wrote block leaders to step down so that fresh elections should be held for new office bearers, a move that has been rejected by the block leaders.

The government last year said it no longer recognise the block leaders whom people say are duplicating the job of councillors.

If thses pepole want to be called chiefs let them go to their villages and cry for chieftency there. cities and towns are not villages, we do not need these self proclaimed blockleaders or “chiefs”. These people are a nuisance during funerals to the bereaved. they want to be treated like kings, they also steal part of the donated condolence contributions. If they have nothing to do let them start farming.
