Lilongwe mob kills 28 year-old habitual criminal

A 28 year-old man in Lilongwe who, according to Public Relations Officer for Lilongwe Model Police Station, Ramsey Mushani was a habitual criminal has been killed by a mob at Piasoni Square Market in Area 18.

“Martin Mbewe who was commonly known as Zomela and had several arrest warrants in connection to house break-ins was attacked by a mob that suspected he was about to commit a crime with his two friends in the area,” said Mushani.

The mob which recognised him and two unidentified friends had linked them to several house break-ins in the area, they chased the three but only managed to catch Mbewe and beat him to death.

“The killing of Mbewe who is originally from Traditional Authority Chadza in Lilongwe is a major setback to justice because we had several arrest warrants for him in connection with several crimes.

“The cases are likely to go cold. It is for this reason that we always advise against mob justice as it stands in the way of justice,” said Mushani.

Mushani further advised the public to take all suspects to the nearest police and leave the court to administer justice.
