The seasoned golfer emerged top in a field of 80 golfers with 40 stableford points, counting out Sunil Godambe who had the same number of points.

“I must begin by thanking the ‘Bank of the Nation’ for sponsoring this tournament and inviting me to participate. Also thanks to my wife Agness for working me up, otherwise I would have overslept. I enjoyed my game today and it was wonderful playing alongside the likes of William Mabulekesi of National Bank,” said Penumlungu, who had his handicap chopped by two strokes by stand-in-golf captain Frank Mwalo.

Godambe, another seasoned golfer settled for the second position after being counted out by the champion with Moses Nthakomwa and William Chimpeni finishing third and fourth respectively. Abu Muhammed had the longest drive with youthful Aadil Parker claiming the nearest-the-pin prize.

The ladies’ section was won by Regina Mwanza with 41 stableford points, ahead of Mina Mkandawire, who had 37 points.

Agness Penumlungu, wife to lucky was the ladies’ longest driver while the Nearest-the-pin for ladies went to Maria Cho.

Mvalo applauded National Bank for sponsoring golf at the club for well over 10 years. He urged the bank to continue supporting the country’s premier golf course.

National Bank’s head of strategy, marketing and corporate affairs Wilkins Mijiga hailed the golfers for honouring the invitation.

“It is a pleasure for National Bank to come to Lilongwe in a different style. We thought of coming with a Mo626 tournament this time. Mo626 is a very exciting product from National Bank, which enables you to do almost every bank transaction on your phone.  With Mo626, the only time you can come to the bank is when you want to access a loan,” said Mijiga.

Mijiga announced that the bank would continue sponsoring golf and the club and other golf courses on invitational basis.

“From now on, National Bank tournaments will be invitational. We believe you customers are the reason we are able to find resources for sponsoring such tournaments. For those that feel excluded by the decision we have taken we say sorry, that is part of life.”

The National Bank official presented a K300,000 cheque to Lilongwe golf club for maintenance of the greens.
