Lutepo denies fleeing Malawi

Businessman Osward Lutepo who is at the centre of a K2.6 billion cashgate scandal has denied rumours circulating on social media that he has been arrested as he was fleeing the country at Mchinji Boarder.

Lutepo said in a telephone interview with Nyasa Times that he has no reason to run away from the country.

“Why should I run away? It’s the guilty who will always run away. I am at home with my family as we speak. The people who are spreading these stories are the ones who are afraid, they are the ones who should be running away not me,” said Lutepo.

“I told the Malawi nation when I was coming back home last November that I will cooperate with the authorities and I have cases in court which have not been concluded and I cannot run away,” added Lutepo.

His lawyer Jai Banda also expressed surprise at the news that his client was trying to flee the country.

“It is not true, he is here in Malawi, I just spoke to him. He has indicated to me he cannot run away and is prepared to stand trial and face the allegations leveled against him. This is his country and all his property is tied to the court, he cannot flee the country,” said Banda.

Lutepo, who lost in parliamentary elections in Kasungu north to PPs Beatrice Mwale, is seen as a conduit where PP was using to siphon government funds to the party and commentators say he may reveal the big names that were involved in cashgate once his case starts in court.
