Mafco a threat to our title defence- Silver

Defending TNM Super League champions Silver Strikers have come out in the open to confess that Mafco are a major threat to their title defence, which was already undermined after Football Association of Malawi (Fam) deducted them nine points following the violence that occurred in Balaka last season.

Commenting ahead of their home fixture against the Soccer Instructors from Salima on Saturday, Silver’s head coach Stain Chirwa said they are expecting a tough game against the visiting soldiers.

“Looking at the way Mafco finished last season, this is going to be a tough game. They (Mafco) are a very good side and are a major threat to our title defende,” said Chirwa at the club’s training base on Thursday.

The bankers’ coach, however, said his side would be at an advantage meeting the soldiers on home soil: “They defeated us in Dwangwa last season and now that we are playing at home, we have to beat them at all costs,” he said.

On the other hand, Mafco coach Stereo Gondwe said the Soccer Instructors would also be looking forward to revenging the 3-0 loss suffered by his side at the hands of the bankers at Silver Stadium
during the first round of last season.

“They defeated us 3-0 in the first round last season but this time round they will be facing a different Mafco altogether. All our players are in the right mood and we are going to fight from the first
up to the last whistle,” said Gondwe.

Both Silver and Mafco started the league on a flying note last week, winning 2-0 and 3-0 against Mighty Wanderers and rookies Chikwawa United respectively and Lilongwe fans are guaranteed of a
mouth-watering fixture at Silver.
