Makawa, Kamphulusa win Airtel Thyolo golf tourney

Nickson Makawa ended his long wait for a major title after winning Airtel Golf tournament held at at Thyolo Sports Club on Saturdaywith 45 points.

Makawa, who is Airtel Malawi Zone Manager for Eastern Region, overcame a field of 78 golfers and pushed seasoned golfers Sopie Kayira to second while 44 points and Willet Kalonga third on 43 points.

Paul Chidale won the longest drive while J Pereira grabbed the nearest to pin accolade.

In the ladies category Bose Kamphulusa emerged the champion with 41 points.

But it was a close shave for Kamphulusa as she emerged a champion after counting back veteran lady golfer Margaret Mkwanda.

Beatrice Mangwana was the longest drive winner in the lady category and J Bapu won the nearest to the pin slot.

Makawa, the champion for the men’s category, said the Saturdaygolf day for Nchalo hardened him off for the hot weather condition.

“I have been runners-up for a number of tournaments so I have won because it was hot. I had another tournament on Saturday which was as good as a practice for Airtel,” Makawa said.

For the Kamphulusa her consistence paid off having recovered from poor performance on front nine.

“I was really calm although my performance on front nine was not good having scored 19 points,” Kamphulusa said.

Airtel Malawi’s Director of Enterprise Rachel Mijiga described the third of this year’s series as successful.

Mijiga said besides helping to develop the game of the golf the tournaments offer them a platform to interact with their customers and get a feedback on products and services that they offer as one of leading mobile phone service providers in the country.

Blantyre Sports Club Golf captain Prem Singh applauded the Airtel for the sponsorship to the club which has only hosted three tournaments this year so far.

Airtel Malawi also donated 200,000 towards maintenance of the course.

Airtel Malawi will hold another tournament at Kasasa Golf Club in Dwangwa and wrap this year’s series Lilongwe Golf Course.
