The Mzuzu Magistrate Court has sentenced an 18 year old an amateur boxer to eight years imprisonment with hard labor for robbery.

The court heard that the convict Pachalo Chimaliro in the company of two friends, who are currently at large, robbed a Nigerian national, Matthews Chiku Emeka 84, of his mobile phone, a travelling bag and MK12, 000 cash as he was trying to cross the M1 road at the Zebra Crossing near Katoto robots.

Chimaliro has fought several non title bouts at Obrigado leisure centre in Mzuzu.

Chimaliro was charged with the offence of aggravated robbery contrary to section 301 of the Penal Code.

The state paraded three witnesses who testified against him.

Police Prosecutor Foster Saidi pleaded with the court to mete out a stiffer sentence that would act as a deterrent arguing that the convict has previous convictions.

In mitigation the convict pleaded for leniency, saying that his accomplice, currently at large, was the master minder of the robbery.

But First Grade Magistrate Lilian Munthali quashed the mitigation and agreed with the State that it is the duty of the Courts to give sentences that send signals to would be offenders.

Munthali also described the convict as a threat to society before locking him for eight years.

The convict hails from Chigude Village, Traditional Authority Mtwalo, Mzimba District
