Malawi Police in the northern region district of Karonga are keeping in custody a 27 year-old Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldier for allegedly stealing money by false pretence.
Karonga police deputy spokesperson George Mlewa identified the suspect as Loti Mwakisulu, a military soldier based at Cobbe Barracks in Zomba district.
According to Mlewa, the suspect has been collecting money from different youths who are holding the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) deceiving them that they will be recruited as MDF soldiers.
“He has been demanding people to pay the sum of money amounting to K80,000 each to qualify for recruotment among the requirements,” said Mlewa.
The district deputy police spokesperson said the arrest after a tip off from some of the victims.
“The suspect started collecting money from the youths since last year,” he added.
He said so far five victins have already lodged complaints against him for the same and that he will appear before the court soon.
Mwakisulu hails from Mwakisulu village in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Kilupula in Karonga district.
