Malawi army soldier drowns in Lake Malawi

A Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldier died on Christmas day after drowning in Lake Malawi at Baobab holiday resort in Senga-bay, Salima.

In a statement released by Salima Police Public relations officer Gift Chitowe on Thursday said the deceased was identified as Sergeant Grey Mtenda, 32 from Malawi Armed Forces College (MAFCO).

Mtenda comes from Chinyonga Village Traditional Authority Kapeni in Blantyre.

According to Chitowe the deceased was reported missing by his wife before his body was found floating close to the beach at night on Boxing Day.

“The Police were called to collect the body on the same night and the body was taken to Salima District Hospital for a postmortem where it was found that he died of suffocation after drowning,” said Chitowe.

Chitowe said the deceased had gone to the Lake to have fun as part of the Christmas celebrations.
