Malawi baby without a nose its ‘Arhinia’ condition – doctors
Another woman in Malawi’s lakeshore district of Salima has given to birth to baby without a nose in what doctors say it’s a condition called “Arhinia”.
According to Salima district hospital spokesperson William Kaunda, the baby has irregular features as well and appears blind , was transferred to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KKCH) in Lilongwe for specialist treatment.
Born to Moreen Chikalamba of Mkochi Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chiwere in Dowa District, the child was born in the morning hours of Wednesday.
Kamuzu Central Hospital director Dr. Noorden Alide confirmed about the baby.
He said the baby has a condition called “Arhinia” which is the congenital absence of the external nose, nasal cavities and offertory apparatus.
Alide said “arhinia is an extremely rare condition.”
According to the doctor, a baby with such condition “experience serious problems with regard to an open airway and feeding.”
The development comes barely two weeks after a baby with strange features was born in in the same Salima district.
