Malawi beat Rwanda 1-0 in friendly: Atusaye score penalty

Malawi’s strength testing match in Kigali ended in a 1-0 win over Rwanda on Wednesday.

Interim coach Tom Saintfeit watched his overhauled squad get a proper run-out of the pre-world cup qualifier crunch  tie against Nigeria next month.

The only goal of the game was scored from the penalty spot by Atusaye Nyondo on 3o minutes.

The Flames were without captain Joseph Kamwendo, Platinum Stars midfielder Robert Ng’ambi, defender Foster Namwela and strikers Chiukepo Msowoya and Esau Kanyenda amidst allegations of players’ protest over the behaviour of coach Saintfiet.

Leader of delegation and Football Association of Malawi (FAM) second vice-president Pikawo Ngalamila said the performance by the Flames was “impressive” and that the win would be a morale booster to the squad.

Malawi are preparing for away game against Nigeria in the crucial World Cup qualifier on September 7.

Rwanda are ranked 131 on Fifa Coca-Cola rankings while the Flames are 118.

Flames line up: Charles Swini, Limbikani Mzava, Moses Chavula, Harry Nyirenda (George Nyirenda), James Sangala, Phillip Masiye, Chimango Kayira, Peter Wadabwa, John Banda, Atusaye, Robin Ngalande.
