Malawi captain turns down call up : Kamwendo wants to give chance to new players

Malawi national football team coach Young Chimodzi recalled DRC based professional Joseph Kamwendo who is also captain of the team for a friendly game against Zambia on May 10 but ehe has declined to be available for national duty.

Chimodzi’s move followed his counterpart Honour Janza decision to call up seasoned campaigners including Africa Cup of Nations winner Rainford Kalaba, and his TP Mazembe teammate Given Singuluma, Nathan Sinkala and Kabaso Chongo.

Kamwendo confirmed being approached by Chimodzi for the Zambia but turned down saying he wants to give a chance to up-and-coming players.

“As you know that I won’t be part of Cosafa squad. I thought it better to take the team that is going to represent us at Cosafa,” Kamwendo said.

“I wish I was there because all my TZ Mazembe will play the games but it is good for up-and coming players to get a chance and show what they bring to the team.”

He said he had confidence in the players that have made the trip to Zambia.

“I know they will make us proud.”

Some of these coaches you wonder how they control their judgement-is Kamwendo the only left winger for the country? Are Chimodzi and company not after long term plans for the Flames? What’s the logic of inviting Kamwendo when you have players like Gerald Phiri Jr and others that need to be tested in friendlies before roping them into national team full-time services? I believe Malawi has so many young players in all corners who need recognition but it seems the coaches are lazy to scout them. They always would like to use the same players without enhancing competition.Malawi needs to develop… Read more »

Anyway Kamwendo is useless , he can’t even defend plus he dribbles going backwards instead of forward. Waste of a player….
