Malawi Carlsberg Cup kicks off May 18: New format, awards

The 2013 edition of prestigious Carlsberg Cup competition whose prize money has been increased to a whooping K20 million, will kick-off on May 18, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced.

The competition will start with the preliminary round of the phase one and expected to wrap-up on September 14th, 2013,

This was disclosed to reporters on Monday by FAM and Carlsberg Malawi officials at Chiwembe Technical Centre.

FAM’s CEO Sugzo Nyirenda said this year’s tournament will be participated by the 15 Super League teams and all Premier Division teams from the three regional leagues namely Southern Region Football League, Lilongwe District Football League and Mzuzu District Football League.

Nyirenda said the Division One teams have been excluded in this year’s competition due to budget constraints as well as the tightness of the 2013 football calendar.

In terms of the format, Nyirenda said the competition will be played in two phase’s labeled phase one and two.

‘All games will be played on knockout basis. There will be no extra time or replays and games will go straight to penalties in case of draws,” said Nyirenda.

Format

Nyirenda said the phase one of the competition will involve the premier division teams with its draw to be done on May 14th.

Southern Region will have 20 teams with Lilongwe contributing 20 as well while Mzuzu will have 18 teams.

On regional level, the games are expected to kick-off on May 18th up to June 29th with an aim of finding the best three for the national draw.

In phase two, the nine teams from the regional leagues will then join the 15 Super League teams for the national draw which will be conducted on July 15th.

About 24 teams are expected to take part for the national draw. However, top eight teams from last season’s TNM Super League standings will be seeded.

Nyirenda said for the seven remaining Super League teams will join the nine regional league teams to make the national phase preliminary round of 16 which will be played during the weekend of 3rd/ 4th August.

The eight winners from that phase will join the seeded eight super league teams for the final round of 16 to be played during the weekend of 17/ 18 August.

Nyirenda also said the quarter finals are expected to be played during the weekend of 31ST Augusts. / 1st September followed by semi-finals the following weekend of 7/8th September and the finals on 14th September.

Prizes

The winning team will carter home a whooping of K7 million with the losing finalists smiling all the way to the bank to collect K3 million while the semifinalists will receive K 1 million.

Nyirenda said the sponsor will also dress the teams from the quarterfinals.

Awards
A player who will score more goals than anybody else will receive K100, 000 with man of the match in each game from the quarterfinals given K10, 000.

There is also a new award called the Carlsberg Discovery of the tournament pegged at K100,000. According to Nyirenda this award will go to a young unknown player who will do wonders in the tournament.

For the media, the best print and electronic will receive K50,000 each with the runners up K30,000 while the third place from both sides will be given K20,000 each.
