Malawi churches  losing track on abortion and homosexuality- Activist Mwachande

Human rights activist and social commentator Allie Mwachande has blamed the faith community for losing track in discharging their religious duties.

Mwachande (Left): Let God be the judge.
Mwachande (Left): Let God be the judge.

This follows the decision by the Episcopal Coference of Malawi (ECM) and the Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) in playing a leading role in organizing the national wide Anti-Abortion and Same sex Marriage demonstrations.

The two religious associations led thousands of Malawians across the country on Tuesday 6th December 2016 to massive protests across the country in which among other things delivered a petition to Members of Parliament (MP’s) against an alleged Bill to be tabled in Parliament to legalize Abortion and Same-Sex Marriages in Malawi.

Speaking in his own capacity, Mwachande said the religious leaders got it completely
wrong to take it into the street.

Mwachande therefore noted that this is a clear indication that the religious leaders who are highly respected in every society have lost track and their role in the society.

“I personally think it was wrong for the servants of the Lord to lead the march protests because they are suppossed to voice out their concerns on any particular issue or against anything happening in any society through the pulpit.

“As servants of God, they always need to bring people together, preach about love and togetherness so if they behave this way what do they expect politicians or non-believers do?” wondered Mwachande.

When asked if the reasons for the demonstrations were not valid, Mwachande said the issues [of Abortion and Same-Sex Marriages] need to be teated with sober minds and to clearly understand why people are doing that and on the other hand we focus on what the Bible teaches us.

“On safe abortion, I believe it is a necessary law not to everyone but to a selected group of people for example those who have been raped or who have conceived unplaned. We have had cases of people dying after using unsafe traditional methods because they are afraid to go to hospital to undergo safe abortion.

“On same sex marriages, l think they should concentrate on spreading the gospel, teach the people what the Bible tells us about marriage so that those practicing what the faith leaders believe to be wrong should change and follow the right path,” he said.

He also blamed some of the members for putting on a mask as they are also involved in the same practices they are publicly condemning to simply to blind fold Malawians and bring confusion.

“It is no longer a secret that we have Pastors, Prophets, Apostles, Priests etc who at one pointing in time impregnated someone’s daughter and forced her to undergo an abortion. What if she had refused to abort via expensive clinics they send them for safe abortions? How many could have been ex-communicated?” challenged Mwachande.

Mwachande therefore reminded the Church leaders that as much as they have a right to express there opinions, they should not interfere spiritually in the lives of gays, lesbians and any other human being.

“They must not insist only on issues related to abortion, same sex marriages, contraceptive methods no! Let them leave a room for the Lord as the Bible always teaches as not to judge because we will be judged as well thus whether immediately after our death or at the end of times-judgement day,” Mwachande said.

He further emphasized that all human beings are commanded by Lord Jesus Christ to love and respect all people and that stance must not be changed in any way.

“Whatever people do on their own is between them and their Lord. I as Allie Mwachande I have my own beliefs and will not pass judgement on anyone because that is the Lord’s job. On the hot topic of legalizing abortion and same sex marriage, we can just agree to disagree,”
said Mwachande adding that “there are good Christians out there who are not making noise”.

The issues of legalizing abortion and same sex marriages in Malawi have been the talk of town resulting into mixed reaction with the majority condemning the practices.

The Malawi government however has denied the exisitence or drafting of such Bills as claimed by people.

Very true indeed. We can’t develop with the current mindset of Malawians and Africans in general. You would be surprised and disappointed that today, girls as young as 14 are being married off to old men by their proudly-African-cultural-custodian kinsmen. We have to focus on how we can develop as a people first rather than going around policing what people do in theit bedrooms and with their lives. Otherwise, I bet you we are going nowhere, decades later we will still be the least developed nation in the world. Too bad, but its just the facts of reality, and one… Read more »

Well said Mwachande. Malawi needs abortion to be legalised so that poor women and girls can equally access safe abortion. The church has no right to tell us about reproduction because these loud mouthed priests and pastor ( or rather the church) does not look after children. I agree with Mwachande, most priests and pastors are hypocrites! Let parliament pass the Abortion Bill and Let God be the judge! Osati anthu oti mukuchimwa daily muziuza chochita amayi ndi atsikana omwe they face huge responsibility due to pregancy and child care. Acha zibambo awo a ana nayenda apa ndi apo, namwelera,… Read more »

Lets as well abolish courts as judges are equally sinners, and leave everything to God. Is this the arguement? That is absurd.
