Muluzi: For peace talks

The former Malawi leader said the skirmishes between rebels Renamo and ruling party Frelimo are a threat to the economy of Malawi and other regional countries.

Muluzi, who is a special envoy for Commonwealth, said there was need for  Frelimo and Renamo to come to a round table for negotiations in a bid to end the year long fighting that can lead to a return of a full blown civil war.

He therefore said retired heads of state from Sadc region including himself are ready to take up the negotiating positions in order to bring lasting peace in Mozambique.

Renamo militias are blamed for the killing of the four Malawians and the setting ablaze of one truck and three tankers blowing up K70 million worth of fuel in the process.

The Renamo leader Alfonso Dlakama is refusing to come out of the bush to hammer a peace deal telling the government to make assurances of his safety first but the government says there was need to agree on the agenda of the negotiations first before issues of Dhlakama’s security are discussed.

Dhlakama lost to Frelimo’s Filippe Nyuse and the Renamo leader accused the ruling party of high level vote rigging.

Serving or retired heads of state from SADC are a waste of effort. Most are sympathetic to FRELIMO because they belong to this liberation party grouping that is scared to bits of opposition. Mbeki betrayed the people of zimbabwe and so did Zuma.

This is cheap politics. My advice to you Muluzi is solve the Lake Malawi wrangle and let Chisano should relinquish the responsibility of mediating the Lake Malawi stand-off and instead broker peace between Frelimo and Renamo. For how long shall we wait to know the outcome of mediation? Tatopa nanu anthu adyera inu, You are just looking for allowances when you know very well you are a failure… Read more »
