Malawi ex-VP Kachali vie for Speaker post

Former vice president Khumbo Kachali has stepped in the race for the election of Speaker of Parliament.

Four lawmakers have already confirmed plans to vie for the post of parliament speaker when the house convenes for its first meeting next week. They include Malawi Congress Party (MCP) spokesman Dr Jessie Kabwira, veteran MP Joseph Njovuyalema, MCP vice President Richard Msowoya, ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) member Dr George Chaponda.

Kachali, who was unceremoniously dumped Joyce Banda’s Peoples Party (PP) as a reaction for having been rejected for the position of the party’s running-mate which went to then leading youthful minister Sosten Gwengwe threw his weight on Banda’s archrival, Peter Mutharika for presidency.

He won his Mzimba seat on PP ticket but his membership is shrouded in controversy and reportedly struck a deal with Mutharika to help him ascend to the position of the Speaker of Parliament in return to the endorsement he made.

He has since declared his intention for the position and started canvassing among the lawmakers for their support.

The former ruling PP have not met as a parliamentary caucus to discuss on whether they wiil field a candidate for the Speaker or the two deputies.

But insiders say they will likely back MCP candidate.
