Malawi gets medical supplies from UAE

Rak Gas international a United Arab Emirates based company on Monday donated medicine and medical supplies to Malawi.

The handover ceremony of the donation which took place at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe was attended by President Joyce Banda as well as Ministry of Health officials.

The donation comes following the visit of President Banda to the United Arab Emirates and the talks which she had with the ruler of Ras AlKhaima His Highness Sheikh Saisal Bin Saqr Al Qasimi.

Speaking before the official handover of the medicine and the medical supplies to the Malawi Government, President Banda said the donation is timely as it will help ease the problem of drug shortages in our various hospitals in the country.

Said Banda, “This donation stands to make huge differences in the delivery of quality health care services to our people.

“This gesture presents a major boost to my Government’s commitment and efforts to addressing the problem of shortage of drugs and medical supplies in our hospitals and clinics.”

According to President Banda, government is intensifying its efforts to improve among others, two health indicators.

“My government is intensifying efforts to improve among others the mortality ratio and under five mortality rate that currently stands at 465 per 100,000 and 112 per 1,000 live births respectively,” she said.

The first citizen therefore said the donation is timely as it forms part of the broader efforts to improve child and maternal health in Malawi.

Speaking earlier, Chimwemwe Chikusa Rak Gas’ Country Manager said Rak Gas will continue with the donations to Malawi in the near future.

“As am talking now, two consignments of medicine and medical supplies have already been delivered from Dubai which is totaling to over US$ one million,” he said.

Chikusa also took his time to thank the Malawi government through President Banda for awarding the company with an oil and gas exploration license.

According to Chikuse, the company will also assist Malawi in the training of staff in oil and gas exploration as well as providing the necessary equipment.

Rak Gas is an experienced international oil gas exploration and development company, which belongs to the government of United Arab Emirates.

The donation  include critical medicines for the treatment  of diabetes such as insulin, a range of Injectables antibiotics like oral antibiotics and medical supplies such as intravenous cannulae that are used in administration of medicine in children.
