Malawi gov’t accountant found with K3m cash in his car, arrested
Malawi Police said it has arrested Roosevelt Franklin Ndovi, 50, a Principal Accountant in the Accountant General’s department in Lilongwe for alleged illegal possession of K3 million in his car and US$25,000 found at his house.
National police Spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo said Tuesday that following a tip off, officers pounced on Ndovi and when they searched his car he had K3 million in cash and after searching his house they found foreign currency without supporting documents.
“We got a tip off from well-wishers and when we searched his car as he drove from Office of President and Cabinet, we found him with K3million cash ( about US$ 7,500) and when police searched his home in Area 25, US$25,400 was found without supporting documents,” said Manjolo.
She said Ndovi has been charged of money laundering and illegal possession of foreign currency.
The arrest comes hot on the heels of another of an Accounts Assistant for the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Patrick Sithole for alleged illegal possession of K120 million which was in different currencies.
This week, Malawi Council of Churches (MCC) expressed regret at the high levels of corruption in public institutions and appealed to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to bring graft cases to the very end to uproot the vice in the civil service.
And President Banda on Monday retaliated on her zeal to fight corruption saying, “there will be no sacred cows in my quest to root out corruption in Malawi and please be rest assured that no official allegedly involved in shady dealings will be spared from the long arm of the law.”
