Malawi govt owes contractors K25 billion
Government has revealed that it owes contractors hired on various development projects over K25 billion.
Minister of Transport and public Works, Francis Kasaila told Capital Radio that meanwhile government is servicing the huge debt affecting the completion of some of the major projects initiated a some years back.
“There is over K25 billion debt that government intends to service by the end of this year but there is serious implications if we fails to do because that means the projects that currently have stalled will remain in same state,” explained Kasaila.
Many projects including road infrastructure have stalled due to lack of funds. Among them are the Zomba-Jali-Chitakale road and the rehabilitation of Chileka International airport with contractors refusing to work on credit.
Other projects to be affected by the huge debt include improvement of road network in the country’s major cities of Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu.
