Malawi lose to Rwanda 2-0 in CECAFA openor

Malawi national football team , the Flames, lost the opening match of their in 2012 Cecafa Tusker Senior Challenge Cup campaign when they lost  2-0 to Rwanda’s Amabvubi in Uganda on Monday on day three of the regional tournament..

Flames coach Kinnah Phiri was hoping for a good start but the results were a set-back for his campaign.

The cracks in Flames defence were witnessed in the 37th minute when the whole defence failed clear the ball in the penalty box a ball which was roped in from the left flank.

Jean Batiste Mugiraneze scored from inside the box following a goal mouth scramble in the 42nd minute.

Malawi pressed for an equaliser and they should have got it but Joseph Kamwendo blasted two great chances over the bar.

Rwanda made the game safe late on when, following a swift counter-attack, skipper Haruna Niyonzima fired in a long shot from outside the box that left Malawian goalkeeper Charles Swini with no chance.

The second game of the group saw Zanzibar play out a goalless draw with Eritrea.

Malawi’s next game against Eritrea will be played on Thursday November 29.

Malawi is the only guest team considered for this year’s edition.

The Flames have in their appearances as Cecafa guests never gone past the quarter final stage.
