Malawi man commits suicide by hanging after testing HIV positive

A 42-year-old man in Chileka, Blantyre has committed a suicide by hanging himself after testing HIV positive, police have confirmed.

Isaac Masangano who hailed from Kampala village, T/A Kapeni in Blantyre hung himself in his bedroom on Wednesday when he discovered he was HIV/Aids positive.

National police deputy Public Relations Officer, Nicholas Gondwa while commenting on the issue said the law-enforcers were worried with the increase of suicide cases in the country.

”Just within a day (30th September 2015), four people have died in suicide by hanging themselves for reasons that could have been solved had it been they shared their issues with other people,” explained Gondwa.

Another suicide case was recorded in Lilongwe where a 27-year-old Zebedeyo Moffat of Kauma location hung himself to the roof of his house.

Similar incident happened at Linthipe where a 60-year-old mother, Kundeule Afraki hung herself to the roof of a veranda of her house after picking a  mere quarrel with her children.

”The fourth one happened in Mbonani village, Sub T/ A Chanthunya in Balaka where a 20-year-old Frank Leonard killed himself in his bedroom,” said Gondwa.

Leonard, according to police, killed himself while his wife was away fetching water.

”This one (Leonard) was a well-known chamba smoker and had been seen shouting and speaking to himself. As police we are saddened with such alarming but avoidable deaths of this kind.

”We believe there are institutions both government and private that assist people who are aggrieved, rights violated or traumatized and need counselling,” added Gondwa.

Thats the grieving process of which one has to go thru, DABDA stages i.e. D-enial, A-anger, B-argaing, D-epression and A-cceptance. So dont just blame the medical practitioner kuti counselling yawo sinali bwino because sangakakamize munthu to pass thru the stages if one is stuck at one stage. These stages dont bappen in a chronological order they can start anywhere. Nde it might happen kuti uyu denial kapena. anger inakamupezera kunyumba kwa yekha thts y he kled himself koma mwina ndi ma side effects a one of the components in the ARVs if he was put on treatment that is. Malawians lets not be judgemental pliz, all in all killing oneself is not a solution to broblems u just create alot to the remaining ones

  14. Optimist says:

Probably he didn’t get a proper counselling and he thought to end it all by finishing himself. The other thing is that there is so much Stigma in Malawi and so many people would rather no go for a test ending up with alot of people who alot are positive and do not have the courage to get tested. They would rather remain blind than knowing their real status. These holier than thou are the most dangerous ones in spreading the virus than the tested one who takes precautions when having sex.Panopa sinthawi yomasekana kuti somebody is positive. Its a chain and we are affected in another way round.

How was the reason known? Did he leave the note behind? How come his name get published openly concerning his status? Has his relatives accepted or allowed this? Do all the people who tests ,keep confidential the results? Or are the results open like criminal records? Where is respect???

  25. Kalekeni Kanene says:

Doctors who conducted the tests on these people must take the blame. It seems they don’t counsel the patients adequately. Counselling brings courage to the sufferers to accept that one can live long with the virus as long as he or she follows the proper health practice. Shame to our medical personnel. Mukuphetsa anthu. Boma lichitepo kanthu apa. HIV has been in the country since 1985. Simatenda achilendo ayi.

  26. redeemed says:

It’s sad to hear of such devastating incidents at this day and age. From what I have established, our worse enemy isn’t the virus itself, but the stigma attached to it. I wish people could strive to transform their perception towards this desease because we are all either infected or affected. Another problem is the attitude of our medical practitioners who are usually careless when handling patients of this status which I suspect has influenced the deceased to take such a drastic decision. I even doubt that proper counseling process was conducted prior to the testing and most of all delivering the bad news. May I plead with my fellow Malawians to choose to be more considerate than judgemental. I mean it’s only human.

  27. johnmasanza says:

We are in the last days bt still more my fellow malawias let’s disclose our problems to those we trust to avoid these kinds of negligence death.Hanging is not a proper solution it only shows luck of maturity

  35. PMW says:

That’s what happens when you have stupid institutions that spend billions of money making the same old useless jingles instead of really working to end HIV stigma. By now people should have realized that HIV is just another virus. But we still hear nonsense like “nthenda ya boma” “amene uja Ndi odwala” etc because those who grab the money to fight the stigma are too busy using it to buy political favors.
