Malawi man commits suicide fearing arrest

A 19 year old man has committed suicide at Jalo in the area of Traditional Authority Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota district following a Police man hunt for him after he grievously wounded a Bicycle Taxi operator following an altercation after the Bicycle broke down.

Nkhotakota Police Station Public Relations Officer Kaitano Lubrino confirmed the development in a statement made available to Nyasa Times saying the deceased hanged himself in his bedroom.

The Police Publicist identified the deceased as Haluna Mselemu saying they had gone to his house looking for him but his relatives were reluctant to divulge his whereabouts.

It is alleged that during the night of 31st March, 2013 Mselemu was in the company of his friend and on their way home from a drinking spree.suicide

But they changed their mind and decided to turned back to continue drinking.

Mselemu then coaxed a Bicycle Taxi Operator, 39 year old Justine Panganani to take him to his home to collect some money for the continued drinking.

“On their way back the bicycle developed a fault and this angered the deceased who broke the bottle he was carrying and stabbed the bicycle operator on the lateral right chest, on both hands and on the back.

“The bicycle operator was rescued by passersby who took him to Nkhotakota District Hospital where his wounds were sutured and was treated as an outpatient same night,” Lubrino said.

The deceased hailed from Kapeta village, Traditional Authority Malengachanzi in the district.
