Malawi misses out in African Movie Academy Awards
Lights, Cameras and Red Carpet action at Port Harcourt, Rivers State in Nigeria as this year’s African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) are scheduled to take place on Saturday 11 June; unfortunately Malawi has missed out on all nominations in 28 categories.
Popularly known as “African Oscars”, the awards are aimed at honouring and promoting excellence in the African movie industry as well as uniting the African continent through arts and culture.
According to media reports, many Malawian film makers had failed to submit their productions on time hence missing out the chances of bringing an accolade home.
Among the local film makers, Flora Suya who has recently launched her movie was quoted in the media saying she thought of launching the movie at home first before submitting it to AMAA for consideration.
However, the Malawi Media Crew arrived in Nigeria on Friday to cover the event.
The media team is being led by Zilanie Gondwe Nyundo, Director of Blackamoore Creatives, a media and PR company which has been entrusted to coordinate Malawi media.
Zilanie said one of the reasons for Malawi to cover the event is to strengthen African unity.
“There is a good relationship between AMAA and Malawi. As you may recall, the 2013 AMAA nominations took place in Lilongwe. Our own Flora Suya has once won an AMAA and B’ella movie was also nominated in 2015,” she stated.
