The impressive showing in the last two matches of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers has made the Flames the second best movers in Africa after Zambia.

This doesn’t mean anything to the Flames. Next month they will head straight back to where they belong; three digits, because of their idleness.

Word of Advice: The best way for the Flames to avoid meeting tough and top teams in future qualifiers especially the world cup and AFCON is to improve its FIFA rankings to atleast a range of between 40 and 70 in the world and between 8 and 15 in Africa.

Playing teams like Lesotho or Mozambique can’t help matters because both are minnows, but top teams that are above Malawi in rankings will always fast track the rankings. The secret is to organize friendly games during both FIFA and non-FIFA calendar dates and play as many as the Flames can.By the time the qualifiers are about to start,Malawi will have registered good wins or draws to greatly improve its ranking and then this will be a prerequisite for its seeding in qualifying groups.Inactivity for the Flames hampers its chances of ranking improvement.By being active, the Flames would make up for players’ quality deficiency with confidence after playing several high profile teams.

Zambia always qualifies for AFCON because it arranges friendly games way before qialifiers and puts itself in a good ranking position to avoid tough teams in the qualitying rounds. The result is the Zambians end up being paired with more minnows than the likes of Ivory Coast or Cameroon or Algeria because they are one of the seeded teams similarly to the mentioned top teams.

Having said so,FAM officials should stop whining about money issues for the Flames but instead man up and strategize on marketing and finding several sponsors for the team. The football association has also to engage in income generating activities like dinner dances, local tournaments, raffle draws, arranging concerts, and any other activity that would seek proceeds for the team’s active engagements.FAM should avoid subjecting the team falling into slumber but strive to make it stronger and stronger for there is some potential in it.
