MP Kaweche: Wants out of court settlement

A Member of Parliament for Nkhatabay North East, David Yohane Kaweche, has been dragged to court accused of failing to maintain the child he conceived with a former student of Malawi College of Accountancy, Jane Mwalwanda.

The lawmaker has since asked for an out of court settlement but Magistrate Anthony Chimphinda Banda has warned that should the parties fail to agree, a full hearing of the matter would start on May 20, the Weekend Times reported.

According to affidavits sworn by Mwalwanda, she had sexual intercourse with MP Kaweche “several times”  and were unprotected leading to her getting pregnant in April last year.

“Soon after I missed my menstruation period I properly informed him about the pregnancy and he told me that he had no problem with it, only that he was not ready to marry me because he is married already,”

Mwalwanda gave birth to a male child she named Nathan on December 31, 2012.

She wants the lawmaker to pay child maintenance damages until Nathan is 18, claiming the youthful MP who won his seat on Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) ticket only have her K50,000 once in January.
