“The State House is pleased to announce that the First Lady Madame Gertrude Mutharika, has been invited to co-chair the African First Ladies Round-table Forum, on Women in Business and Government to be held from August 5-7, 2014 at Washington DC, USA,” said a statement issued by presidential press secretary Fredrick Ndala Jnr.

As Co-Chair, Mrs Mutharika will preside over the event, as First Lady of Malawi and will have the honour of inviting another African First Lady, to join her.

The African First Ladies Round-table Forum on Women in Business and Government will be held alongside the US-African Leaders Summit which will be convened by President Barrack Obama.

The Summit will build on the progress made since Obama’s trip to Africa last year, advance America’s focus on trade and investment in Africa, and highlight America’s commitment to Africa’s security, its democratic development, and its people.

The African Leaders Summit will be held under the theme ‘Investing in Future Generations of Africans’.

This will be the first time for the Malawi first couple to travel abroad together after their wedding and possible time for honeymoon after their engagements.

Mutharika, 74, married Gertrude, 54, in a colourful ceremony before local dignitaries in a jam-packed Blantyre church on June 21.

President Mutharika has been a widower for three decades since the death of his first wife. He has three children from that marriage. The First Lady is also widowed with a son from the first marriage.
