Malawi Parliament: Mwechumu lauds Tembo for his ‘straight-talk’ to PP govt

Mangochi North East Member of Parliament, Alfred Mwechumu has lauded the speech made by Leader of Opposition in parliament Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President John Tembo in his contribution to President’s State Opening Address to the 44th Session of the National Assembly.

Mwechumu, who is a member of the ruling Peoples Party, (PP) said the speech delivered by the leader of the opposition on Monday in response to the state of the nation address, is the best that has been presented in Malawi parliament in a long time.

In his speech, the veteran politician Tembo, avoided to directly attack the Joyce Banda administration and instead dwelt much on reminding the House that the current economic hardships were created by the previous DPP administration.

Mwechumu said Tembo’s speech was “laden with maturity a thing which most of us should borrow a leaf from.”

He added: “It showed that he shares in the spirit of the President that of moving this country forward instead of wasting time on petty issues.”

The legislature from Mangochi North East said it is surprising that some people do not see the logic in the measures that President Banda took when she came into office like devaluation of the Kwacha which he said has had a positive impact on the country’s economy.

“We should not forget where we were coming from at that time. Something drastic needed to be done at that time and what the President did was to save an economy which was in a state of serious ailment and now we have started reaping the fruits of those bold steps,” said Mwechumu.

Tembo said the Joyce Banda administration started well, but the progress has been destructed by the inclusion of the same people who spoiled the previous DPP government and he urged Banda to clean up the system and all the structures.

On the country’s economic challenges, he said the problems started long time before the President administration came in, but cautioned that the current administration should not repeat similar mistakes that would plunge the country into problems again.

Tembo said the problem with the current administration was that it is a mixture of good and bad people.
