Malawi to participate at COSSASA in Zimbabwe

Malawi will send a team at Confederation of School Sports Association of Southern Africa (COSSASA) athletics championship for Under-13 and Under-17 to be held in Harare Zimbabwe from 3 to 7 May.

Malawi Schools Sports Association General Secretary Blackson Malamula said Malawi would be eligible to participate for the first time with the blessings of Malawi National Council of Sports who have paid R65,000 (K3.2 million) affiliation fees.

“In an effort to nurture and develop talent from grassroots and to network, Malawi Schools Sports Association (MASSA) has affiliated and become a member of COSSASA. After requesting Malawi National Council of Sports, the Council responded positively by affiliating to COSSASA,” reads a statement, signed by Malamula.

He said following the developmement MASSA has become a full member of COSSASA which will enable it to participate and host COSSASA games.

“Athletes will gain exposure through participation in such tournaments and networking among other benefits,” he said.

Athletes, who have been non-residential training willregroup on 29 April ahead of their departure on 2 May  to Harare-Zimbabwe to take part in this year’s COSSASA athletics championship.

MASSA is also expected to pay R300 (K15,000) participation fees for each of the athletes who are coached by veteran coach Isaac Phiri.
