Malawi Police arrest 31 in intensified city swoop

Police in Blantyre Wednesday night carried out an operation to rid the central business district (CBD) of the commercial city and its vicinity of suspected rogues and vagabonds.

According to Police, some of the suspects have been attacking innocent people and snatching their valuables at night.

At least 31 persons were detained in the swoop and spent two nights at Blantyre Police Station where they were charged with rogue and vagabond.

The suspects were found loitering around the city’s streets and other residential areas and could not give proper reasons for their idling during odd hours.

Blantyre Police Spokesperson, Elizabeth Divala, told Nyasa Times, the law enforcers apprehended 16 girls and 15 men.

She said the sweeping exercise was aimed at bringing sanity and tightening security in the city.

“This is an ongoing sweeping exercise to ensure that our city is safe and free from criminals. The suspects were arrested in the policing area of Blantyre Police and they are expected to appear before the Blantyre Magistrate Court on Friday,” said Divala.

Malawi cities are infested with young criminals who spend the day gambling and cause havoc at night because most of them have nothing to keep them busy.

The arrest comes barely two days after police also arrested three hardcore criminals who were reportedly on the verge of terrorizing the city.

The criminals were arrested at some lodge in Machinjiri Township with an AK 47 rifle and a pistol plus 79 live ammunition.
