Malawi Police arrest Gulewamkulu for sex assualt in Dedza

Gulewakulu dancer has been arrested in Dedza for raping a girl under the age of sixteen.

Confirming the arrest, Dedza police spokesman constable Cassim Manda has identified the dancer as Lazaro Maxwell (19) of Chatondeze village in the area of Traditional Authority Chilikumwendo in Dedza district.

According to Manda,Maxwell was arrested after the police  received the complaint from the victim whom together with her friend , paid a special visit to her relatives

When the victim and her friend were coming back ,they saw Gulewamkulu ahead of them, and as per custom they should wait to pave the way to the dancers, Manda said.

The police spokesperson further said that when the two  realized that the dancers were not passing,the victim and her friend asked authorities from the cult who were close to them, to let the dancers  move from the area and authorities did as requested.

Surprisingly, when the girls reached a bushy area,between Bowazulo and Kalipande villages, a dancer ran after them and grabbed the victim,pushing her to nearby garden and raped her.

But the victim studied the type Gulewamkulu,his attire and the height,Manda added.

Thereafter, the matter was reported police at Chafumbwa Police Unit, where medical report was issued .

Then  police arrested the suspect after getting revelation from his colleagues.

Meanwhile, the suspect  who is in police custody has been cautioned and formally charged with the offence of defilement contrary to section 138 Sub- section 1 of Penal Code .
