Malawi Police arrest Phwezi student for gay sex assault, charged with sodomy

Malawi police in the northern region district of Rumphi have arrested a form four Phwezi Boys secondary school student on sodomy charges.

Rumphi police station officer Assistant commissioner Peter Chimseu identified the student as Mathias Maweta 21 of Mkwate village T/A Mulumbe in Zomba district.

Chimseu said the suspect sodomized a 14 year old a form two pupil at the same learning institution (name shielded).

The station officer said on 27 May this year and at about 21:30hrs the suspect found the victim in a company of fellow learners who were solving mathematics in a classroom.

He then called the form two boy to the toilet and ordered him to kneel down.

”After that the suspect took the boy to the school’s ground and had carnal knowledge with him. All this happened while the suspect threatened to beat the boy with a metal bar he was carrying,” said Chimseu.

He said police visited the ground and found used condoms which they believe the suspect used in sodomizing the boy.

The police also managed to trace similar type of condoms in the suspect’s bag.

A medical conducted at Rumphi district hospital also confirmed that the boy was sexualy assaulted.

The suspect is expecting to appear before Rumphi first grade magistrate court soon to answer charges of sodomy contrary to section 153 sub section (a) of the penal code.

It carries a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment with hard labour

In 2010, Malawi drew international condemnation after two gay men were sentenced to 14 years of hard labour for sodomy during late president Bingu wa Mutharika’s rule.

The couple were, however, released amid an international outcry.
