Malawi Police arrest Zomba woman for possessing 125 live ammunition

A 39-year-old Janet Saidi is in police custody in Zomba on suspicion that she unlawfully possessed live ammunition.

Eastern Region Police spokesperson Thomeck Nyaude on Wednesday said the woman suspect was arrested together with her accomplice 34-year-old Maxwell Mzumbu on Easter Sunday at their homes.

“We effected the arrests of the two following a tip from the general public that the woman was in possession of live ammunition at her home.

“We raided her home where we found 125 live ammunition. This is when she later revealed that the second suspect (Maxwell Mzumbu) was the one who gave her the ammunition,” he said.polisii

The police spokesperson further added: “We made a follow-up and arrested the second suspect at his home where we found about nine live ammunition of 9-millimeter type of rifles.”

Nyaude said the two suspects will appear in court soon to answer charges of being found in possession of items suspected to have been unlawfully obtained.

Saidi comes from Mpakati Village, Traditional Authority Chikowi whereas Mzumbu comes Sauka Village, Traditional Authority Chikowi in the district.

There have been cases of possession of illegal firearms and ammunition in the old capital city of Malawi in recent months.

In January this year, Malawi Police arrested an Malawian of Asian  origin for being found with 304 live ammunition in his house. Two weeks ago, two people were also arrested at 4 Miles roadblock along the Zomba-Blantyre Road for possessing two rifles.
