Malawi Police arrests 13 youths in Mzuzu for holding anti-Mutharika protest, insulting President

About 13 members of the Mzuzu Youth Association (MYA) have been arrested Monday  morning in Mzuzu for reportedly holding anti-government protests and  allegedly criticising President Peter Mutharika.

Police in Mzuzu could not make immediate comment on the arrest, but Nyasa Times has physically confirmed their nabbing.

The 13  were arrested around Katoto Secondary School area where they planned to hold anti-government protests for the country’s abysmal socio-economic scenario.

They were carrying a coffin – the size of which a six year old child could fit and a dog. It was draped with ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regalia.

According to our findings, the youths had planned to put the dog in the coffin – draped up in DPP regalia – to symbolize the death of government which, they claim, has “gone to the dogs.”

Earlier, divisions had sounded in the Association with on faction of calling off the demonstration that were scheduled for today [Monday], saying government had started “responding to some of their complaints.”

About ten thousand tons of maize to be distributed in ADMARC depots arrived in Mzuzu Monday morning.

But the arrested youths, claim their friends were “bribed by government.”

They criticised Mutharika  that he was failing to run the affairs of government and that he did not tell Malawians the truth regarding the maize situation.

The arrests come a day after the Catholic bishops in the country also gave government a reality check on its administration mannerisms.

It also comes after Patrick Semu, a 19-year-old information and communications technology (ICT) student at Daeyang Luke University in Lilongwe, was arrested for  allegedly criticising Mutharika in a public minibus transport.

National Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa confirmed that the student was charged with conduct likely to cause breach of peace contrary to Section 182 of the Penal Code and attracts a fine or six months imprisonment.

In September last year, the Balaka Magistrate’s Court convicted and fined K3 000 a 60-year-old man after finding him guilty of insulting the President.

I DON’T KNOW WHY MALAWIANS SPEND A LOT OF MONEY FOR THE POST OF HIGH OFFICE AND REFUSE TO SLEEP ON THE BED OF CRITICISM?

Much as I would not have liked to comment, my spirit is telling me to write atleast something for my friends.

To those who read the precious book, “The Bible”, 2 Timothy 3:1 going down tells us that there shall come ‘hard times’.

We can call for the President’s resignation and if he does, the other one to come will still have these challenges for the Bible said about it.

Lets stop crying for the Professor’s resignation and help him with ways of how we can reduce the chaos in this beloved Malawi.

Read also Matthew 24 the whole chapter and lean about the signs of the end times.

  18. Since the presidency fell in the hands of southerners this country is moving backwards. Sorry. The southerners may say Mr Ibu will win because the south is so populous, but the reality is, when it comes to his maladministration the south is the worst hit. They are even eating madeya and yet their president is lying that there’s a lot of maize in Malawi. Akummwera zipangani zautsiru zanuzo tione yemwe ati avutike ndi mbuzi yanuyo you call the president.

  19. Donka says:

    Wanangwa (if at all it is your name);
You are a fool, fortunately you know that Chewas and Tumbukas did not partake in putting in place this mediocrity that the dunderheads from the south are the worst sufferers of. But unfortunately we are being forced to be in this together as we in the central and north are being denied our sweat by the pathetic leadership

  35. God… have mercy on us..teach us n gv us direction..

  36. Citty boy says:

Fighting the government is like shooting yourself on the foot. Hunger in the country has its own history. As for this year, floods and poor rains contributed to the scarcity of maize. As for the social economic woes, it is only an insane person to blame APM and DPP. Because the country depends on donor support. Now who chased away the donors? Who are involved in cashgate? Arrest them cause they are being sent by opposition figures.

  37. Jelbin mk says:

Muntharika must fall he is turning our democratic country into a police state where by everyone lives in fear of being arrested, very uncalled for. From now on we should learn to choose leaders who had a hand into bringing democracy not cowards who went to America over 40 years ago and only returned to steal from the poor. At least those who were here during the struggle can see and embrace frerdom brought by democracy not these fools such as Goodall, Peter, Chaponda and Bingu who never knew the struggle that our parents suffered.

  38. vavlov says:

Malawi is a democratic country, where freedom of speech should prevail. These arrests will breed dictatorship, reminiscent of the Kamuzu era. Stop arresting people who are simply airing their views/frustration. Government should address their grievancy, and not arresting them

When you read some stories, one thing that becomes clear is that most youths in Malawi have a lot of time to do a lot of nothing.
. . . You see, the writings are on the wall – in black and white, blue and black ink – print and braille; for all to see and read, that APM and his govt are just as useless as they came.
Now, do we need anybody to make or buy a coffin and kill a dog just to communicate the same message which is all-over?

I can see a case of idleness, envy and being used here, hence . . .
. . . a lot of time to do a lot of nothing (coz munthu wapantchito or business alibe nthawi yoseweletsa chomwechi) OR
. . . anger, as the other section of the group was allegedly bribed OR
. . . of being used by some political bigwigs.
“Musalowelere ndale . . . mungaononge tsogolo. Ndale ndikanyama koipa. Sikamayenda wambawamba. Mwatsoka nkukumana nako, Samala kangakuchite tintini.” – Joseph Mkasa (Tigwirane Manja song)
    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
. . . Now, if the unjust laws of gods and men find you guilty, and by whatever misfortune, you fail to pay the fine and are sent to jail for 3 or 6 months, is it worth it? I don’t think so!
. . . Life and time are just too precious and scarce to just be wasted away like this you youths of Mzuzu. Let us find something of worth to do with them. We shall have no time to waste criticising such insensitive, indifferent, unsympathetic and idiotic zombies; as the ones running this country now.
