Malawi Police clears PP’s Mwamlima on Mzuzu murder

Police has said Mzuzu city People’s Party (PP) parliamentary aspirant Bennex Mwamlima is not involved in the killing of a man at the Hilltop Gardens in the city.

Romours were rife in Mzuzu since Friday last week that Mwamlima using his vehicle at night hit and killed a man before he single handedly took him to Mzuzu central Hospital (MCH) mortuary without the knowledge of  police and hospital staff.

But in an interview Mzuzu police spokesperson Sergeant Maurice Chapola said the truth of the matter is that Mwamlima found an unconscious man lying by the road side at Hilltop in the city and as a Good Samaritan he took the person to the hospital for treatment before was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Said Chapola: “ We summoned Mwamlima to ask him on the allegations but we established that he is not the suspect and we clear him of the wrong doing”.

Mwamlima: Police say not a murder suspect

Police said at around 8pm last Friday, Mwamlima, a prominent businessman in Mzuzu was driving a truck from the township  to the Hilltop gardens where he stays and a cyclist his name with held for security reasons was going the same way.

He said the bicycle man stopped Mwamlima claiming that one of the persons he was carrying in his track was dropped out of the vehicle and was lying unconscious by the road side.

Police said when Mwamlima returned to the scene of the accident, he found a man and took him to the hospital for treatment as he suspected him of road accident casualty.

Chapola said the postmortem it carried together with the hospital staff showed that the deceased was murdered.

“The dead body had a mark of a wound which was not fresh on its forehead suggesting that it was hit by a metal bar as the face had a fractured bone.” Chapola said.

Chapola said police suspect some people killed him and dumped the body by the road side to paint a picture as if was killed by a vehicle.

Meanwhile, Chapola said investigations are at an advanced stage and soon it will arrest the suspects and bring them to book.

Meanwhile in an interview, Mwamlima said he is happy to be cleared from the wrong doing but warned those tarnishing his name that they will not prevent him from his political ambitions because he believes in God.
