Police in Lilongwe intercepted 35 kilograms of Heroin destined for Freetown, Sierra Leone and arrested a 54-year-old drug trafficker in the process.
The illicit drug trafficker, Muhammed Mchemela has since been charged with exportation of narcotic drug.
Mchemela, police have disclosed, was arrested while trying to export the Heroin (Diamorphine hcl) concealed in children toys through courier on Wednesday.
Deputy National police Public Relations Officer, Nicholas Gondwa told Nyasa Times that the highly addictive drug was intercepted at one of the leading courier service providers (name withheld) in Lilongwe.
”The drug was about to be exported to Freetown in Sierra Leone, and was properly packed in bottles which were hidden in children toys,” explained Gondwa.
Mchemela disclosed during interrogations that he got the drug from his friend who stays in East Africa.
Meanwhile, the drug has been analysed and tested by National Drug Quality Control laboratory with positive results.
Mchemela who hails from Msosa village in Salima district will appear before court soon.
