Malawi Police nab two for selling fake Zambian currency

A Zambian national and his Malawian accomplice are under police custody in Malawi’s northern district of Chitipa for allegedly trading fake Zambian bank notes.

Chitipa Police Spokesperson, Solemn Chunga, said the two were arrested Wednesday at the district headquarters as they tried to change the fake foreign currency into Malawi kwacha, totaling about K3.4million.

Chunga identified the two suspects as George Nyondo, 32, from Isoka district in Zambia and his Malawian buddy, 31-year-old Lazaro Silanga from Bangamoyo village, Traditional Authority Mwaulambia in Chitipa.arrest

The police publicist explained that members of the public tipped the law enforcers after spotting the two changing the bank notes which were bearing one serial number.

People at the district headquarters habitually use both currencies (Malawi and Zambian kwachas) when buying commodities, a development the Zambian conman used as an advantage to rob Malawians by changing them fake notes.

According to Chunga, the two were expected to appear before the Chitipa Magistrate Court any day to answer charges of selling articles bearing designs in imitation of currency contrary to Section 382 of the penal code.
