Malawi Police nets armed robbers, recovers one gun

Police in the Eastern Region district of Balaka are keeping in custody three people for allegedly being found in possession of a rifle without permit.

Balaka Police spokesperson Sub Inspector Jospeh Sauka identified the three as Andrea Amin 56,
Christopher Tung’ande 24 and Goshen Banda 23. He said the three suspects were arrested at Ajiba Village in the area of Traditional Authority Nkaya following a tip off from the public.

“We received a tip that the suspects were plotting to rob cotton buyers in the district at a certain drinking joint. Then police rushed to the scene, where we arrested them and managed to recover a grinner rifle which was hidden in a bag with seven rounds of live ammunition,”said Sauka.

He added that the three suspects will appear before court soon to answer a case of being found in possession of a fire arm without a permit which is contrary to Section 12 (2) of the fire Arms Act and conspiracy to commit a felony which is contrary to Section 404 of the Penal code.robbery

Amin comes from Kadzuwa Village, Traditional Authority Bvumbwe in Thyolo whereas Tung’ande is from Zalimu Village, Traditional Authority Nkaya in Balaka. Banda comes from Masache Village, Traditional Authority Kasakula in Ntchisi.

Meanwhile, Malawi Police is appealing to the general public to report to any nearest police station if they see suspected criminals in their areas.
