Malawi Police officer demoted for sexual assault on suspect

Officer–in–charge for Chilipa Police Unit in the Malawi’s southern district of Mangochi has been demoted and transferred to Mangochi Police station two weeks  after his arrest for sexually assultingt  a suspect in a police cell.

Police in Mangochi had earlier in the month arrested Sergeant Ntalika after he raped a Mozambican woman he had arrested and locked up in the police cell for suspected entering the country illegally.

Ntalika is reported to have spotted the lady at a drinking joint but was rebuffed when he was making sexual advances on her.

Angered with the cold-shoulder  the libidous officer-in-charge  arrested the woman after he noticed that she was a Mozambican because of her accent.

Ntalika appeared in Mangochi second Magistrate’s court where he pleaded not guilty to rape charges.

Police sources told Nyasa Times Wednesday that Ntalika has since been demoted to a mere investigation officer in the criminal investigation department at Mangochi Police Station.

“Reasons for the transfer are for closer monitoring and also was to prevent him from attacks by people surrounding the Chilipa Police Unit who are angered with his conduct and threatened to deal with him,” said the souece.

Ntalika has been replaced by Inspector Thoko Rabison from Mangochi Police Station.

Rape, which is contrary to section 133 of the penal code, attracts a maximum punishment of life imprisonment.

The Ntalika’s case has since been adjourned to December 27 this year,
