Malawi Police say they are ‘still investigating’ WhatsApp coup plot
Malawi Police say they are still investigating opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) officials including its spokesperson Jessie Kabwila on allegations of treason, two months after they were arrested.
Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa said the police are yet to conclude the investigations.
“We are yet to arrest another suspect who is in UK, we are making arrangements to arrest the suspect,” said Gondwa.
Police arrested MP Peter Chakwantha and Ulemu Msungama and Kabwila on allegations that they were planning to topple the government of Peter Mutharika.
The police based their charges on Whatsapp messanger chats among the four suspects, charges described by Malawi Law Society as laughable and other sections of society blamed the government for using state machinery to intimidate and harass the opposition.
The other suspect is said to be Lucy Chitembeya who is based in UK and actively participated in the Whatsapp group chat.

Abiti Kabwila-Kapasula azagwa nazo izi (Ms. kabwila-Kapasula can’t get any sleep with these allegations not disappearing soon!) That is Malawi politics, and welcome; she should have known there is a big difference between being a politician and a teacher in this country of ours. Now that she is in the back benches, the very back row of MCP, where there is no microphone or stage to show off, she is just pouting. Not even giving OChakwera the time of day! And, Police are really taking their precious time investigating these would be zigawenga (power grabbers). Fair justice is slow by… Read more »

I thought the so called coup plotters mentioned there was a man also called Gerald Mzaza? now it’s a lady ? but these other plotters have been traveling freely even outside the country. if indeed they were such guilty-conscious striken, they could have bolted out bail for sure. what worries me is that even if the police unearth another evidence, the same courts should be able to decipher state-cooked up stories just to ensure conviction. maybe they should just concentrate on MRA selective quasi-judicial tactics to finish these State enemies. here in Malawi political enemies are finished with ACB or… Read more »
