The initiative will see FD Communications partnering with key stakeholders to promote Early Childhood Development (ECD) by identifying needs of Chimwembe Nursery School and facilitating support.

FD Communications Public Relations Manager Frank Jomo said through the partnership, the firm will undertake a number of activities aimed at catering for the most pressing needs of the nursery school.

“Chimwembe Nursery School runs a feeding program, but often lacks the food. They’re also in urgent need of a kitchen and safe shelter from where the children catch their daily meals, which comprises breakfast porridge and on a good day, cereals,” said Jomo.

He said to kick-start the partnership FD Communications has undertaken to meet the school’s food bill for the next 12 months as it explores other interventions. The first consignment of the food stuffs was delivered on Wednesday.

“We are working together with the Ward Councilor, traditional leaders, parents and guardians to ensure that together as a community, we should provide for these children and help clear some of the hurdles they face to attain a basic education,” he said.

He said FD Communications realizes that ECD is a multi-sectoral approach towards overall children welfare as it prepares them for life in school and later leads to different profession.

“ECD therefore requires the active cooperation of key stakeholders including government, NGOs, faith-based organizations (FBOs), the private sector and communities themselves. We at FD Communicates are committed to making our humble contributions towards ensuring that these chidren get a stable footing into life,” said the PR Manager.

For his part, Chimwembe Village Development Committee Chairperson Elwin Mkanda said the nursery school was closed last year due to lack of food. He said government had recommended its closure until it identified a donor partner.

“We are very grateful that FD Communications Ltd has come forward to assist. Now the school can re-open, and resume its normal activities,” he said.

Located in Traditional Authority Somba of Blantyre on the Mpemba road, Chimwembe Nursery School is an Early Childhood Development (ECD) facility struggling to meet the basic needs of its learners. The school has an enrolment of 60 children from underprivileged backgrounds drawn from 10 surrounding villages.

According to Malawi’s National ECD Strategic Plan (2009-2014), 37% of the country’s total population comprises children who are within the prescribed age of eight years requiring  ECD to get their start to life.
