Malawi ref appointed for Olympic Youth Games

Malawi woman’s top Fifa referee Bernadetter Kwimbira-Mzika has been appointed to officiate at the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games in China in August.

The appointment has made her become the first Malawian woman referee to be assigned to handle Olympic Games.

The soft-spoken referee said Fifa had selected 18 referees with three of them including the Malawian are from CAF.

The other two referees coincidentally are from neighbouring Zambia.

“Out of 18 referees selected there are only three of us from CAF,” Kwimbira-Mzika said.
“The other referees are Zambia.”

She said her appointment was not only an honour to her but Malawi as whole.

“When I consider that I have been appointed I feel good because it’s the Malawi flag that I carry along.”

Kwimbira, the former top athlete turned referee, was also picked for Elite Referees course offered by Confederation of African Football (CAF) last year where she emerged the best performing referee at the course.

She has also made it as the only Malawian referee appointed to officiate in the forthcoming Africa World Cup qualifiers.
