Malawi ruling PP officials fight at State House: Makande Vs Chikunde

No respect for President Joyce Banda. No respect for the State House and they are a real cause for worry to security. These are two high ranking members of Malawi’s ruling Peoples Party (PP), Hophmally Makande, the Publicity Secretary and Ephraim Chibvunde the party’s Deputy Political Director.

Makande and Chibvunde last week Wednesday unashamedly exchanged blows at the Kamuzu Palace in the presence of the President Banda, according to eye witnesses.

The President had reportedly summoned the two senior officials at her official residence to sort out some issues between them.

Their disgraceful act left the Head of State with no choice but raise security alarm for security personnel who immediately responded and nearly fired at the two officials for threatening her security.

Three top PP officials, who witnessed the fiasco , told Nyasa Times, the president had to plead with her guards to simply shove the two out of the palace. The three governing party members confided in Nyasa Times that the cause of the fight was backbiting.

They alleged that Makande and Chibvunde had been feeding the president with lies about each other and the president got tired of the backbiting and decided to summon them.

“Nobody knew his friend was also invited. They were shocked to see each other at the State House and that they were both meeting the president at the same time.

“The president then revealed what each one was telling her of the other and asked them to either refute or confirm the stories,” explained one of the sources.

He further expounded that immediately after the president’s introduction of the subject, tempers flared in each of the two and they could not help but start exchanging blows under the nose of the president.

“Shocked and threatened by the fight, the president raised the security alarm and her guards arrived in no time and nearly shot them,” said the source.

He said the president had to restrain her guards not to shoot them but instead just get them out of the respected premises, degrading the president and discrediting the ruling party.

”I hope the president will do something about it because it
undermines her security. And it shows the two have no respect for her,” observed the source.

Meanwhile, reports indicate the governing party secretariat, after being alerted about the fracas, has instituted an investigation and see how best to deal with the disgraceful act.

The two PP members refused to comment on the matter when contacted in separate interviews.
