Malawi sex worker found dead at pub in Mzuzu

Police in Mzuzu in the early hours of Saturday found the dead body of a 22 year sex worker at the popular Paris Bottle Store at old Town section of the city.

Mzuzu Police Station Spokesperson Sergeant Maurice Chapola confirmed the death of Bertha Mwamulika Banda of Kankhomba village, Traditional Authority Kanyenda in Nkhotakota District.

In October 2012, Police in Mzuzu also found the dead body of another 22 year old Commercial Sex Worker at Thandeka Rest House at the same Old Town.

Police then  arrested 40 year old Staff Sergeant at Moyale Barracks Symon Msowoya on allegations that he strangled the sex worker. Msowoya is currently on bail pending trial but is back to work.dead

According to Chapola, the woman complained of body pains in the early hours of 1st February 2013 but her friends later saw her at the pub’s counter taking beer in the company of a man believed to be her boy friend.

“It is alleged that…later she disappeared with the man… to Room number one where she was found lying dead the next morning. The identity of the man who was last seen with her is yet to be established,”Chapola said.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased is at Mzuzu Central Hospital Mortuary for post mortem.

In a related development, a 40 year old Tanzanian National Francis John Setumbi of Tabata village was found dead along the road leading to Njerenjere Private School at Mchengautuwa Township in Mzuzu.

Relatives told Police that the deceased on 1stFebruary 2013 complained of pain due swollen legs but forced himself to walk to work.

“But as the deceased was about to reach Njerenjere Private School he collapsed and died,” Chapola said.

Post-mortem conducted at Mzuzu Central Hospital indicated that death was due to heart failure.

While an employee of the Malawi Post Corporation in Mzuzu was found dead at his house in Katawa Township after binge partying on Spirits.

The deceased, Cornellius Zayaye 42 hailed from Mpota Village, Traditional Authority Kasumbu, Dedza District.
