Malawi Sheikh killed for stealing cassava, woman stabbed to death

Malawi Police said a Muslim Sheikh Majidu Mustafa was beaten to death on Sunday after he was caught stealing cassava in lakeshore district of Salima in the central region.

Salima police public relations officer, Gift Chitowe, said on Wednesday that the deceased was a senior Sheikh serving at Chapita Mosque in the area of Traditional Authority Kambwiri in Salima and comes from Changamale village TA Kambwiri in the district.

Chitowe said the 38-year-old Sheikh was caught red handed packing cassava tubers in a 50 kilogram sack.

“According to an eye witness, the deceased was apprehended in one garden in the village and people started beating him until he was unconscious.

“The deceased suffered many injuries and was rushed to Salima District Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival,” said Chitowe.

Elsewhere, Police said  they have arrested  a man who allegedly stabbed to death a 50-year-old  woman on Tuesday in Ntchisi near Malomo Agriculture Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) forest.

Malomo Police Unit Officer In- charge Mike Khondiwa identified the deceased as Martha Kafera.

Khondiwa said the deceased left her home very early in the morning of Tuesday for her farm to supply her tenants with some food items.

He said on her way at a distance of 500 meters from her house, she met a man carrying a 50kg bag of flour, Panasonic radio and a small hand bag which are believed to have been stolen within the area.

“The deceased identified the man and that’s when the man put down what he was carrying and stabbed her on the back and forehead with a sharp knife,” said Khondiwa.

He said after the incident, the man ran away leaving the suspected stolen items at the same place where he killed Kafera.

She was then taken to Malomo Health Centre where she was pronounced dead and postmortem revealed that she died due to heavy bleeding.

Reports say there was fracas at Malomo Police Unit on Tuesday when relatives of the deceased demanded the hand over the suspect to them so that they deal with him as revenge for the death of the woman.

“We have since transferred the suspect to Ntchisi police station as people caused commotion at our unit at Malomo. People are angry for the death of the woman.

Ironically it has been established that the suspect is the uncle to deceased’s husband,” said Gladson M’bumpha, Ntchisi Public Relations Officer.

The deceased, Martha Kafera, hailed from Chikowa village in Traditional Authority Chilooko in the district.
